The Groves High School Administrative Detention Process

The GHS Administrative Detention Process

At Robert W. Groves High School, we are committed to maintaining a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment while providing students with opportunities to correct inappropriate behaviors before more serious disciplinary consequences, such as In-School Suspension or Out-of-School Suspension, become necessary.

What Is Administrative Detention?

Administrative Detention is a school-level disciplinary consequence primarily assigned to students for Level 1 infractions of the SCCPSS Student Code of Conduct. The purpose of detention is to hold students accountable, reinforce school expectations, and provide an opportunity for students to make better choices moving forward.

Examples of behaviors that may result in an administrative detention include:

  • Repeated tardiness to school or class

  • Failure to follow classroom or school procedures

  • Minor classroom disruptions or off-task behavior

  • Inappropriate language or minor disrespect

  • Failure to comply with reasonable staff directions

  • Dress code or uniform violations

  • Being in an unauthorized area

  • Other Level 1 violations as identified in the SCCPSS Student Code of Conduct

The 5-Step Rebel Reset

Groves High School follows the 5-Step Rebel Reset when addressing Level 1 behaviors. Administrative detention is not intended to replace the interventions and communication that should occur before a student is referred for repeated minor misconduct.  The 5-Step Rebel Reset process consists of the following steps:

  1. Redirect the Behavior
  2. Verbal Warning
  3. Student Conference & Parent/Guardian Contact/Teacher-Level Detention
  4. Parent/Guardian Conference
  5. Administrative Detention

Our goal is to ensure that students and families are informed of concerns and are provided opportunities to correct behaviors before disciplinary consequences escalate.  We want to reset and re-engage students to maximize student success.

Administrative Detention Schedule

All school-wide Administrative Detentions will be held:

Mondays and Wednesdays
2:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Groves High School Dining Hall

Students assigned an administrative detention are expected to report on time, remain for the entire detention period, and follow all school and staff expectations while serving detention.  Students must be picked up no later than 4:00 p.m.

Failure to report to or successfully complete an assigned detention may result in additional disciplinary action in accordance with school and district procedures.

Teacher-Level Detentions

Teachers may also choose to hold teacher-level detentions at other appropriate times as part of their classroom management and intervention process. Teacher-level detention may be used to address classroom-specific concerns before behaviors require an administrative referral.

Working Together for Student Success

Administrative detention is designed to be a corrective intervention—not simply a punishment. Our goal is to help students understand expectations, take responsibility for their choices, and return to the classroom prepared to be successful.

We ask parents and guardians to support the school by discussing behavioral expectations with their students and ensuring that students attend assigned detentions.

At Groves High School, maintaining a positive school climate is a shared responsibility. By working together, we can protect instructional time, maintain an orderly learning environment, and keep our students focused on academic success and the Unlimited Possibilities available to every Rebel.
